Nutty Christian Caller (The Atheist Experience)

The Atheist Experience is a cable access call-in show in Austin, TX. They get a lot of very very strange Christian callers. This one is probably the most brainwashed nutters I've heard.  Note the complete inability to absorb the idea that people can speak for themselves and the preacher doesn't know everyhing:

The fact that I have to share my state with these pathetic retards is enough to drive me insane.

I really hope this is a crank call. She sounds so much like Ellie Mae Clampett I want to believe that's where the accent came from.

...but wanting to believe doesn't make it so :-(

If I hadn't been born in Texas, I'd have a hard time believing she wasn't either a poe, or just a common troll.

Let me just say one thing: Governor Goodhair got standing ovations by saying that Texas should secede. That should tell you everything you need to know about Tejas.

I've heard these guys before, they get a lot of strange calls and they're pretty funny.

I too wondered if the caller was a troll putting-on, as you say, an Ellie Mae Clampett act. However, she was rather slow with the come-backs, so maybe she really was actually that illiterate.

These blindly accepting Christians (like a certain troll we know) often don't feel the need to explain their basis for belief. Apparently all that is required is just wrapping themselves up in the Awesome Power of the Holy Spirit. So the little things, like offering any convincing arguments for their belief, is completely unnecessary to them.

I've lived in Texas, too. I also have been around a lot of African-American fundies, who can be extremely brainwashed. When she said "priest" I had to wonder, because usually fundies have "pastors."

There are certainly people who are as ignorant as that. We can probably all even think of one or two.

Aliens are devils, ha. I don't believe there are aliens, but if there are, this may explain why they haven't visited -- they worry that every nutjob on this planet would mistake them for dangerous imaginary creatures and attack them. Religious humans would seem insane in the eyes of fully rational beings (such as the humans of the future).

I doubt it, LA. Texas is loaded with fuckwits like this. They're everywhere.

I remember a different episode wherein the caller was complaining that that they screen the callers and only allow the dumbest on the show. He (the caller) then made his best cases for god and against atheism. He only managed to support his own claim that AE selects for incompetent theologians.

hahaha

The problem with theists is that all their supporting arguments are either flawed or just plain ridiculous.

They believe because they want to believe, not for any better reason.

@Bisher - And a magical guy in the sky is so much more plausible an explanation for how the world was created.

Explaining the flaws in your logic won't make any difference because you won't listen to begin with.

Science cannot completely or perfectly explain how we got here. But that is 100% irrelevant. Even if the scientific explanation is completely false, that does still not prove that god exists. "A is false" does not equal "B is true".

Whether the claim is that god created the universe or that the universe began with a singularity and and life evolved from organic chemistry over billions of years - both claims have to provide testable, repeatable proof in order to be accepted as true.

The scientific explanation has made observations, formed hypotheses, the hypotheses have been tested, they explain the phenomenon, they make predictions about other phenomenon that we would expect to be true if the previous hypotheses are true, and the test results can be repeated.

On the other hand - religious claims have done none of these things. There is zero empirical proof that god exists or created the universe. The assertion is not even testable.

To your statement that the earth is perfect, this is a fallacy. Perfect for what? Perfect to support the life that evolved on it? Well of course it is. Your statement implies that the current state of the Earth had intent behind it. It did not. And it is perfectly suited to support the ecosystems on it because they evolved together. It is completely illogical to believe that it could be otherwise. Could incompatible ecosystems evolve together? Of course not.

Your statement is like saying, "Isn't it amazing that water exists for fish to swim in"? It's nonsensical. Fish evolved the way they are /because/ of water, so of course they are perfectly suited to it.

That sounded a lot like Beth. I wonder. Once Matt said that he met...someone? Beth? That way.

LadyAtheist said...

Yes, I think Beth was a call-in Poe, possibly this call. I learned that long after I made this post.

Iconify gave the most reasonable answer and Bisher the worst argument if one can define it as such. LadyAtheist I see no follow button on your blog.
