We have a ...Your moral issue is a false dichotomy. We have a legal system, and even without that, there are social and interpersonal consequences for bad behavior. Some of the "sins" of some religions are totally not "immoral" in other religions, such as cutting your hair, eating meat, eating root vegetables, working a 7-day (or 4-day) work week, eating shellfish, etc.

"Survival of the fittest" is really survival of the individuals that have the best fit for the environment, not a might-makes-right kind of fitness. Small mammals were the best fit for the environment after the asteroid hit the planet and made it uninhabitable for large dinosaurs. But still, there is evidence in nature that anti-social behavior is punished and pro-social behavior is rewarded in social species, and those other species don't believe in a god. That applies in communities but not to out-groups, which is why we have war (which almost no Christians object to)

Once you have decided that the Bible will be your "moral authority" you can pick and choose whatever you like from it because there are contradictions everywhere. When God commanded genocide including ripping fetuses out of pregnant women, does that mean God makes exceptions? The Bible is wide open to interpretation, which is why there are so many denominations and thousands of "non-denominational" congregations. It's hardly a moral compass if its believers can disagree on so many things.

As for me being a "strong" atheist, you misunderstand the term. A "strong" atheist is someone who believes there is proof that god doesn't exist. I disbelieve because there isn't compelling proof, which is agnosticism or "weak" atheism." But I call myself a free thinker because I make up my mind based on evidence. We don't have denominations so it's kind of pointless to try to use labels.

Why do I write this blog? (which I kind of took a break from recently) Because I live in an area where there are more fundamentalist Christians than anyplace I've lived before. Frankly, I find their views shocking. They let their pastor tell them what to wear or what to watch on TV (or even sometimes tell them not to watch any TV) and pray for the silliest of things, or for the most serious even though their prayers change nothing. So I guess I was reaching out when I started it. People here are so used to being surrounded by like-minded people that they really don't get other people at all. Homeschooled kids? They only know what their parents and pastors have taught them about other people. They have had their worlds so controlled for them that they can't make up their own minds. I find fundamentalist religions of all kinds rather sick, and being around people with the sickness makes me want to fight it. You'll see on my blog that there have been instances of children dying because of Christianity. In a day care "ministry" which in Indiana has lower standards than a regular day care, a toddler wandered off unnoticed and drowned in a baptismal pool. Kids are being denied health care in favor of faith "healing" and they are dying. Reasonable Christians aren't speaking out against this stuff so it's up to us free thinkers and atheists.

If you think it's wrong for the law to allow religious exemptions for child care and health care standards, then you should be fighting against it instead of worrying about what atheists believe. We believe a wide variety of things but one thing I think we agree about is that when religion harms people it should not get a pass from civil law.

LadyAtheisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12132821431322748921noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8667116946377253622.post-69716344570752661792015-11-25T01:10:48.971-05:002015-11-25T01:10:48.971-05:00What I am trying to bring across is that if God do...What I am trying to bring across is that if God doesn't exist, then everything is permissible (Dostoevsky). You need to have God in the picture to say that humans have a moral compass. If you take God out of the picture, then people can just blame instincts or what Darwin says, "survival of the fittest'.

I know people have different perspectives regarding abortion, but I strongly belive that it is wrong because of the Bible. For me, God and the Bible set my moral compass and what I regard as right or wrong. If God didn't exist I would just say that my instincts told me to steal from the store because I wanted a new ipad. Not of any moral compass. But becasue God does exist (even though you say that is false), He has instilled in us a moral compass that allows us to know what is right and wrong.

p.s. I thought it was funny that you were arguing with the man who said the Bible was not the word of God by telling him that other Christians do not agree even though I can tell you are a strong atheist.

Also I was wondering, why have you devoted part of your life in trying to refute the Bible. You must have thought about this for a long time considering you have created an entire blog about it (of course disproving there is a God and the Bible. If you are so sure Christians are wrong about God, why would it matter to you? There is nothing... And one more thing, what will you do if you there is a sudden event that proves the existence of God? Will you continue to walk blindly?

I am not trying to be rude or come across as arrogant but trying to learn more about how an atheist thinks and their mindset. And thank you for replying my previous questions. This may be enforcing your belief that God does not exist, but this is strengthening my faith and helping me to grow and learn more about what I believe and why.

Thanks!! :)Maddyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15824113109447263290noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8667116946377253622.post-5610798665935527882015-11-24T15:43:21.464-05:002015-11-24T15:43:21.464-05:00Depending on the variety of christianity, it's...Depending on the variety of christianity, it's possible to believe yet go to Hell. So-called Christians frequently say that other people will be going to Hell, like child molesters, but those people would go to Heaven too if they believed according to John (which btw is the latest book of the bible, from ca. 90 and very likely not written by someone who actually met Jesus)

You say that children have a moral compass. True. So do other primates, elephants, marine mammals, and dogs. That is not proof of a god. It's actually the reverse. It means that you can be moral without a god.LadyAtheisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12132821431322748921noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8667116946377253622.post-26838703618777979022015-11-23T20:52:23.897-05:002015-11-23T20:52:23.897-05:00What are your views on abortion, and homosexuality...What are your views on abortion, and homosexuality? Did you ever believe in any religion? Like in your childhood? One of your questions was if you knew 100 percent you would go to hell, then would you still be a Christian? Of course not. One of the reasons to be a Christian is to go to heaven. If you knew you were going to hell, then you know you wouldn't be a Christian. "For God so loved the world that whoever believes in him may have eternal life" John 3:16 My aunt is an atheist who asks similar questions as you. I am praying that God opens your ears and your heart to see the truth.

Anyway, If God does not exist then there is no moral bases for all humans. You did say yourself that a moral bases in all humans does exist. Even as a child we have a moral compass that tells us good from bad. If God doesn't exist, then everything is permissible. Why do we even have a legal system. You can't then say that a person is wrong, you would say it is their instincts to survive or ect. Animals don't have a moral compass but do things out of fear, and survival instincts. You also say that humans are different from animals. Explain that.Maddyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15824113109447263290noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8667116946377253622.post-34929369574766781982012-06-09T23:34:08.612-04:002012-06-09T23:34:08.612-04:00Yeah, these questions say a lot about the level of...Yeah, these questions say a lot about the level of ignorance and lack of critical thinking skills of Christians, or at least YECs.LadyAtheisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12132821431322748921noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8667116946377253622.post-43308969060328031792012-06-09T15:20:54.040-04:002012-06-09T15:20:54.040-04:00#7 makes no sense. What if there were 45 instead?

As for #8, the obvious answer is that it took the agricultural revolution to create sufficient increases in populations in various regions of the world which made cities possible.

If Biblical YEC were true, then we would expect the oldest genetic haplotype to be in the Middle East.
