Frank Schaeffer is one of our most valuable commentators on the whole modern Christian Right phenomenon. Since his father was one of its ideological founders, he has an insider's view even though he's now renounced almost all of it (he is still a Christian, though).
I strongly recommend his book Crazy for God (I reviewed it here). Very insightful and readable.
It's on my to-read list! Young fundies don't remember a time when they weren't able to bully politicians. I want to be educated on how it came to pass.
