R.I.P. Bin Laden, 5/1/11 ... or 2002?

Conspiracy theorists have been claiming for years that ObL died of natural causes in 2002.  I can't wait to see how Prison Planet and other nuttery sites spin the news about yesterday's attack.

They dumped the body into the sea... how convenient.  I hope he doesn't rise from the dead and show up on beaches around the world.  Or perhaps he'll mate with a shark and his evil spawn will terrorize America's beaches.

Is a burial at sea really a good idea?  He could wash ashore and become a trophy collector's wet dream.  His bones would be sold off on ebay one by one, except for a few that would be enshrined somewhere in the mountains of Pakistan.

Unfortunately, the conspiracy is just beginning: where are the photos, where is the body, is this fake like the moon landing, who are these mysterious Seal Team 6 people-that is, if they are people. I've never been to Prison Planet, but I have a feeling that is what they might say. Soooo not awesome.

Farewell, Mr. Bin Laden. I will miss seeing your unwashed face leering at me from the news channel. And now, it is time to watch Adult Swim. Ooh, the new SuperJail look hilarious!

Is that "Prison Planet" or "Loony-bin Planet"?

Conspiratards are all alike. There's nothing, absolutely nothing, that they can't use as "support" for some outlandish claim. Any evidence that the claim is wrong, just becomes proof of how fiendishly detailed and far-reaching the conspiracy is.

So there's no point in worrying about what they think.

Ah yes, the infamous conspiracy theory

A conspiracy is when two or more persons conspire to commit an (unlawful) act (usually at the expense of others) meant to gain one thing or the other. That's about it really.

A theory works somewhat differently. No really.

- theory

. a proposed explanation of which its status is still conjectural (in contrast to well-established propositions that are regarded as reporting matters of actual fact)

. a coherent group of general propositions used as principles of explanation for a class of phenomena

A theory without evidence remains a theory. Once a piece of evidence, no matter how flimsy, in support of a theory is provided, the theory becomes a possibility. The more evidence in support of a theory is gathered, the more probable the theory becomes - up to a point where it would be silly; even criminal, to dismiss or withhold the evidence that is gathered.

A factual theory then, is not "Hey, I've got some random thoughts about this and that!", rather, it is completely the opposite; it's a compilation of 'all' the data (in reference to a subject), and when you have converging lines of (scientific) thought they merge to become a factual theory.

There are people who seem to think "theory" means random stabs in the dark while it actually means an explanation of certain phenomena supported by a body of facts and often unifying similarly supported hypotheses such as the some-people-are-dumb-as-dirt theory.

So, when we care to pose something as true/fact(ual), we must also keep in mind what it implies or infers must be true/fact(ual) as well. If it isn't, then there is something amiss with what is posed as true/fact(ual).

After all, explicit entails implicit - by definition.

Yes, there's a colloquial use of the word "theory" because all the better words are harder to say!

There's a colloquial use of the word "conspiracy" as well.

Now what?
