I don't think that's the motivation for adding -American. It's more about pride of the origins in the face of bigotry against them. Note that people from countries that weren't oppressed by Americans who were here when their ancestors arrived don't seem to hyphenate?
Hello Lady Atheist, Just in case you're tired of reading Atheist material, even though it's fascinating and gives you ammunition for the zealots, I'd like to recommend curling up with a good novel with two main characters who are non-believers. It might be refreshing to read something where atheism isn't the main focus but just part of who the characters are. Check out my reviews on Amazon and let me know if you'd like to add yours. http://www.amazon.com/Roses-Will-ebook/dp/B005RU3LRC/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1325742647&sr=1-1

Good ol' Freddy Douglas there if ya need him. Congrats. I love to see something like this from my Asian peeps, anyone of them. Awesome,
Kriss
My favorite Frederick Douglas quote is: "I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs."
I read his autobiography and a very good biography on him years ago and was very inspired by him.
It's amazing that any slave was successfully converted!
"Many" isn't most.
And, it never fails to amuse me how immigrants show their gratitude for being American by placing "American" behind the name of their ancestral home.
